Brussels Sprout Kalettes Garden Mix
Kalettes Garden Mix is a genuinely different crop for the veg patch — a British-bred cross between kale and Brussels sprouts, producing frilly-edged buttons in shades of green and purple. Unlike a traditional sprout, the flavour is mild and sweet with none of the bitterness, closer to spring greens, and it makes a lovely change on the winter plate. Sow February to March and you'll be picking from November right through to March, one of the longest harvest windows of any brassica here. The plants are notably hardy and stand up well to hard frosts, so don't be in a rush to clear them. As with other tall brassicas, firm the base in well and net young plants against birds while they establish.
