How do I Plant Seed Potatoes?

Growing potatoes is super rewarding and surprisingly simple with the right kit. Here’s a quick guide:

  1. Choose the Right Variety
At Rowena Garden Centre, you’ll find a selection of seed potatoes — including early, second early and main crop types — perfect for different harvest timings.

  2. Chit Your Potatoes (Optional but Helpful)
A few weeks before planting, stand seed potatoes in a cool, light place so the sprouts can start to develop. This helps give them a head start.

  3. Prepare the Soil
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Loosen the ground and mix in some compost for extra nutrients.

  4. Planting Depth & Spacing
Sow your potatoes about 10–15 cm deep and 30 cm apart, with rows spaced around 60–75 cm apart.

  5. Hill as They Grow
When shoots appear above the soil, gently pile soil around the stems to encourage more tuber growth.

  6. Harvest Time!
Early crops can be lifted when flowers appear, while main crops are usually ready later in the season once foliage begins to yellow.
