Propagation Made Simple

Propagation Made Simple

Propagation is a straightforward way to grow new plants from existing ones. It’s cost-effective, rewarding, and a great way to fill your garden, patio, or home with more of the plants you already love.

At Rowena Garden Centre, we support gardeners at every level and stock the essentials to help you get started, including bulbs, seeds, and starter plants.

Three easy ways to propagate at home

1) Growing from seeds

Seeds are one of the simplest and most affordable ways to produce lots of plants.

Best for: vegetables, herbs, annual flowers
What you’ll need: seeds, seed compost, pots/trays, light, water

Helpful tip: keep compost evenly moist and place trays in a bright, warm spot for best germination.

2) Taking cuttings

Cuttings involve taking a small piece of a healthy plant and encouraging it to root.

Best for: many houseplants, herbs, and some shrubs
What you’ll need: clean secateurs, small pots, compost

Helpful tip: remove lower leaves, then keep cuttings warm and in bright (but indirect) light.

3) Planting bulbs

Bulbs are an easy way to enjoy seasonal colour with minimal effort.

Best for: spring and summer displays in beds and pots
What you’ll need: bulbs, compost or soil, a hand trowel

Helpful tip: planting time matters. Many spring-flowering bulbs go in during autumn, while summer-flowering bulbs are often planted in spring.

Starter plants for a confident start

If you’re new to propagation, starter plants are a great option. They give you a healthy plant to begin with, so you can focus on learning simple techniques like potting on, taking cuttings, or dividing clumps as they grow.
